New 2024 Toyota GR86 Trueno Edition Harks Back to the 1980s AE86
Ever since the production of the second-gen 86 sports car kicked off almost two years ago, Toyota has offered many special edition versions. The latest was just unveiled, and it’s called the GR86 Trueno Edition.

If the moniker sounds familiar, that’s because it is a modern-day ode to the 1980s AE86 Sprinter Trueno, which came with a twin-cam 16-valve 1.6-liter engine that could be revved up to 7,500 rpm. It had a limited-slip differential, MacPherson struts, and four-link coil springs with lateral rods, and it tipped the scales at roughly 2,300 pounds (1,043 kg). Due to its rear-wheel drive layout, balanced weight proportion, and five-speed stick shift, it was popular with those into rallying, circuit driving, and drifting.
As for the new GR86 Trueno Edition, it comes with a choice of two exterior colors, which are either red or white. It features black accents on the outside, with the dark shade having been applied to the hood, stripes on the sides, side mirror casings, door handles, and rear spoiler. Both ends of the car are decorated with Trueno logos, and on the inside, it gets a numbered plate on the dashboard that marks its limited nature, as only 860 of them will ever see the light of day for the United States market, with manual and automatic transmissions.
Speaking of the interior, Toyota’s new special model has a mix of red leather and Ultrasuede upholstery, a leather-wrapped gearshift lever, and a red-stitched shift boot. The gearshift lever boasts a Trueno logo; elsewhere, it is offered with the standard 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that sports smartphone connectivity. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are on deck, and a premium sound system that features eight speakers is also included.
For the 2024 model year, the GR86 sports car can be ordered with the Performance Package. Standard on the Trueno Edition and optional on the 2024 GR86, it comprises Brembo brakes and ZF Sachs dampers. Moreover, the Japanese automaker says this bundle, tuned by Gazoo Racing for improved comfort, handling, and brake consistency, will be available as a retrofit for existing cars from the 2022 and 2023 model years as long as they’re fitted with 18-inch wheels.
Another novelty for the 2024MY is the addition of new safety gear for cars equipped with the manual transmission, which was previously reserved for those with two pedals. The list includes stuff such as Adaptive Cruise Control , Pre-Collision Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Lead Vehicle Start Alert, Sway Warning, and High Beam Assist.
Toyota says the GR86 Trueno Edition will be available stateside at the end of the year. Pricing will be announced in the next months, and the model will likely sit at the top of the range. The 2023 GR86 has an MSRP of $28,400; for the 2023 GR86 Premium, you’re looking at $31,000, excluding destination.

The two-door coupe and three-door liftback Toyota Sprinter Trueno, named after the Spanish word for thunder, was released alongside the Corolla Levin that derives its name from the Old English word for lightning. Like the Levin, the Trueno was designed to be the performance model of its base, the Sprinter. However, the twin vehicles differ slightly in stylings — early Sprinter Truenos has a sleeker front fascia, while later Truenos, like the 1998 model year, comes without a grille unlike the Corolla Levin of the same model type.
In the Sprinter Trueno’s 28-year run, perhaps the AE86 is the most famous and beloved. Lightweight, affordable, and easily modifiable, the AE86 is ideal for racing and drifting. Following the AE86 in 1987 are the AE91 and AE92 that come in a two-door coupe body and feature fixed headlights. These are available with a 1.5L 93 hp inline four-cylinder engine, a 1.6L 118 hp inline four-cylinder engine, and a 1.6L 143 hp supercharged inline four-cylinder engine. In its final generation, the Sprinter Trueno features five main trims: the top-of-the-line BZ-R with a 165 hp 1.6L 20-valve engine, BZ-G with 165 hp 1.6L engine, XZ with 1.6L 110 hp high-mecha twin-cam engine, and FZ with 1.6L 100 hp high-mecha twin-cam engine.

Toyota menunjukkan AE86 baru itu di ajang Tokyo Auto Salon 2023. Meski terakhir diproduksi tahun 1987, Toyota memamerkan mobil AE86 dengan wujud yang sama dengan versi lawas. Bedanya, mobil AE86 baru ini adalah mobil listrik dan hidrogen.
Toyota AE 86 merupakan mobil yang digilai pecinta otomotif terutama genre drifting atau mengepot. Sejumlah pembalap legendaris menggunakan AE86 sebagai tunggangan mereka. Salahsatunya adalah Keiichi Tsuchiya, sang raja drift dunia. Mobil ini juga semakin populer dan berpengaruh sejak muncul di manga Initial D.

1. Digunakan oleh Keiichi Tsuchiya, raja drift dunia
Popularitas Toyota Trueno AE86 terus meningkat ketika mobil ini digunakan oleh Keiichi Tsuchiya. Pengemudi AE86 itu mengemudikan mobil melalui tikungan untuk menambah daya tarik saat berada di lintasan balap. Dalam sebuah wawancara dengan Jeremy Clarkson yang dilansir dari carthrottle.com, Tsuchiya mengungkapkan “Ketika saya balapan, semua orang tahu bahwa saya akan menang, jadi untuk menghentikan orang bosan, saya mulai nge-drift di tikungan, lebih dari sekadar pengemudi lainnya”.

Sang ayah,Bunta Fujiwara rupanya bukan tukang tahu biasa. Saat muda, ia adalah pembalap jalanan jempolan. Mobil andalannya adalah Toyota Sprinter Trueno atau AE86.
Bunta diam-diam melatih skill mengemudi Takumi dengan cara menyuruhnya mengantar tahu setiap subuh ke hotel di Danau Akina. Untuk menuju ke sana, Takumi harus melewati jalanan di lereng Gunung Akina yang berkelok-kelok dan berbahaya. Dalam beberapa tahun, skill mengemudi Takumi semakin jago. Ia pun bisa mengantar tahu dengan cepat meski melewati jalur Akina yang dikenal punya banyak kelokan sehingga membuat Takumi mempunya skill drifting yang luar biasa.
Bahkan, sejumlah pembalap dengan mobil moderen pun tak bisa mengikutinya di lintasan Akina. Meski menggunakan mobil tua AE86, Takumi bisa mengalahkan banyak pembalap yang menggunakan mobil moderen.
3. Harga lelang AE 86 tembus 1 Miliar
Februari tahun 2022, Direktorat Jendral Kekayaan Negara KPKNL Pontianak menggelar lelang Toyota AE 86 yang dicoba diselundupkan ke Indonesia melalui perbatasan Negara dengan Malaysia di Pos Lintas Batas Negara (PLBN) Nanga Badau di Kalimantan Barat. Dilansir dari djkn.kemenkeu, selama satu jam, mobil ini berhasil mengumpulkan 63 penawaran dan laku terjual dengan harga Rp 1 miliar. Penawaran kepada mobil dambaan para pecinta otomotif ini sangat tinggi. Penawaran terus melonjak dari harga limit Rp96,9 juta hingga mencapai Rp1,036M atau naik sebesar 1.072 persen.
4. Diproduksi kembali dengan konsep tenaga listrik
Awal tahun 2023, dalam event Tokyo Auto Salon 2023 di Jepang, menampilkan dua mobil dengan konsep bertenaga listrik dan hidrogen yang berbasis mobil lawas AE86. Mobil yang bertenaga listrik atau Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) berdasarkan AE86 bodi Corolla Levin. Sedangkan yang bertenaga hidrogen atau H2 berdasarkan bodi Toyota Sprinter Trueno.
