Steptronic
Steptronic — автоматическая КПП с возможностью самостоятельного переключения передач. Система Steptronic устанавливается на автоматические коробки передач дополнительно. В КПП Steptronic рычаг передвигается вперед и назад по двум параллельным секторам. В правом секторе Steptronic, в отличие от простой АКПП не имеет позиций «1» «2» и «3» ограничивающих переключение. Там расположены четыре положения P (parking, стоянка), R (задний ход), N (нейтраль) и D (drive, движение). В этом секторе также имеется положение «M/S» (Manual/Sport) это положение активирует «спортивный» режим переключения АКПП. В этом режиме — АКПП будет удерживать передачу до достижения максимальных оборотов двигателя(настраивается заводом изготовителем) и только после достижения повысит передачу. Как только рычаг КПП оказывается в положении m/s, он «превращается» в джойстик. Если толкнуть его вверх, то включится высшая передача, а сам джойстик, вернется в исходное серединное положение. Толкнув вниз — и КПП тут же понизит передачу, а рычаг снова вернется в нейтральное положение. В этом и есть суть системы Steptronic, позволяющая быстро повышать и понижать передачи, достигая наибольших скоростей и маневренности автомобиля.

Что такое Steptronic и Секвентальная кпп
В чем же отличие этих двух терминов? Начнём, пожалуй, с Steptronicю Итак, Steptronic — это автоматическая коробка передач, у которой имеется функция секвентального переключения скоростных передач. Эта система может быть установлена как дополнение на АКПП. В такой коробке передач рычаг передвигается вперёд и назад только по параллельным секторам: правом и левом. Правый сектор Steptronic не имеет позиций 1,2,3, с помощью которых ограничивается переключение. Вместо них находятся четыре положения R(задний ход), D (drive, движение), P (parking, стоянка) и N (нейтраль). В правом секторе так же присутствует положение «M/S» (Manual/Sport). Данное положение отвечает за активацию режима «Спортивный» для АКПП. Его работа — это удерживать передачу до максимальных оборотов, а затем повысить передачу.
Секвентальная КПП представляет собой механическую коробку передач, у которой имеется гидравлический механизм переключения передач, а так же электронное управление сцеплением. Педали сцепления конечно же нет, но её можно заменить с помощью рычага. Делать это можно не обращая внимание на положение педали акселератора. Таким способом переключения передач пользуются в основном на спортивных соревнованиях.
Таким образом, можно сделать вывод, что Steptronic — автоматическая коробка передач с возможностью принудительного включения ступеней. А в свою очередь Sequentional Transmission (секвентальная КПП) — это механическая коробка передач, у которой имеется электронное управление сцеплением и гидроприводный механизм переключения передач.

Push the gearshift sideways when in D and it goes into sport mode which holds gears longer and downshifts quicker.
If you press it up or pull it down while in sport mode it will go into manual mode where you can select gears manually, but it will still change automatically if you hit redline

Steptronic is great and super easy to use. Smoother than silk for gear changes once run in a bit with the exception of 1 to 2 change but nothing to be concerned about.
My E90 is my first auto BMW and it is perfectly mated to the new engine.

I never use sport mode, please explain so I won’t damage the gear when i use it. So when I speed up to redline for example 1st gear, will it change to 2nd gear automatically? when i brake it, will it go down to lower gear automatically too?

For Sport mode the shifting is more agressive but not nrcessarily at redline. In Manual it will shift up only at redline. It will shift down to 2nd as you come to a stop.

Seems like if you use the manual mode and not shift by yourself, it will be even sportier than just sport mode since it will automatically shift it for you at redline (this is assuming that sport mode doesn’t shift exactly at redline)? Or am I missing something here?

DS (i.e. sport mode) would shift at red line if you floor it, i.e. peddle to the metal, usually it doesn’t shift at redline, but still holds the gears longer than when in ‘D’.
and yes, if you use the manual mode and not shift by yourself, the computer will shift it for you at redline

Can I shift from manual mode to auto mode while driving in the highway (in high speed) or the other way around?

yes, you can switch back and forth, not a problem on the tranny
For highway driving, I usually leave it in D while cruising on the highway

When you use Manual Mode while still in drive (only possible with the paddle shifters) it goes to M#, this manual mode still displays the same characteristics as Drive, it wont go to the redline, but in this mode it will also go back into Drive quicker (ie when you dont manually shift) than DS/Manual does.
